Youth Karate - Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - Ms. Colleen Golrick

Well, it was quite hot out today, so maybe that's why there were only three students in class: Skyler, Simon, and Andrew Grote.

We started out working on everyone's forms. I was able to work with each of them individually to get a few more moves while the others practiced what they had.

I didn't want to do anything too intense, so we worked on some grounding stuff. With partners we did some rooting checking and tried to get into some basic push hands. It may have been a little complicated, but I think Skyler was getting the hang of it by the end.

We finished off with a quick stretch - just a nice, low-key class.

Bagua class 8/24/10 - Wayne Fritz leading

Wayne Fritz led the class:

This past Tuesday (24th) was again just three of us including Sandy,

Andrew and myself. Again I took requests which resulted in our spending

the entire class reviewing the Chung Ting Hua Set. We went over and worked

on any rough parts and actually only got through the Phoenix as a result.

I tried to make sure they at least had a clear understanding and could

practice each change on their own before we progressed to the next one.

Bagua class 8/17/10 - Wayne Fritz leading

Wayne Fritz led the group:
Tuesday night (17th).

It was only Marty and Reid so I asked for requests for what they wanted to work

on. Marty had some questions on the material you worked on with her the

previous week. We did some work on that and I tried to clarify any

confusion and answer her questions as best as possible. I also added a few

things to the material. At that point she decided she had enough to work

on and wanted to practice it for the next couple of weeks. She mentioned

she would not be there for the next two weeks and then said she wanted to

call it a night.

At that point Reid said he wanted to work on the Chung Ting Hua Set so we

spent the rest of the night reviewing that. We went over several times any

parts that were not clear.

Arnis Class 8/23/2010 Brief Notes

Medium size class with Luke, Scott, Jess, David, Colleen and Angus.

Good energy all around, with great temps in the studio.

Warmed up with the standard stick circling and stretching routine.

Spent the rest of the class working on the "ice-pick to hammer" knife drill that Sifu brought back from Arnis Camp.

Another short clip of Guro Roland Rivera showing more of the sensitivity drill

Last nights adult Karate-do class - Sensei Ron Milarek leading

Notes from Sensei Ron Milcarek 8.24.10    Thanks Ron!

Good Morning, I led last night's Karate class. Very good attendance, I have been amazed during the summer, and especially the hot steamy weather, the number of us in there for a work out! Angus, colleen, thomas, jack, andrew, lana, scott, and jenn were there, I led the ten exercises, with only a couple individual suggestions. Did supplemental stretching and oblique and ab work on the floor. Asked others to each lead the group through a form, and do one time all together and once at our own speed. As usual, everyone worked in the back after going up to their rank form.

I always want a cardio section to the class, (keep the blood chemistry in order, sweep away those toxins, keep up the aerobic conditioning, broom out some stress, and go physically and mentally to the place just a little past what is "comfortable...) Last night rather than sparring, we did five two minute timed rounds on the water bags. My suggestions to the group were in the different ways to use the bag, and adjustments on what techniques to throw and how to throw them, especially with injuries. (I am still protecting this finger fracture, one other was having a shoulder problem.) Everyone looked sweaty afterward, some even red faced, (no one puked). I think next time I will have us do a pulse rate check...just for fun.

We finished up with self defense stuff. Did a little bit of "free style" with the knives, focusing on testing the one or two handed grabs against fast stabs or slashes from random angles, from an uncooperative aggressor. Would have done a little standing to relax, and ask Angus to finish with cool down stretching, but it was already ten after eight.

Best, Ron
