Notes from Sifu

A reminder about World Tai Chi and Qigong Day Celebration this coming Saturday April 30 - 9:30-11:30 at Beacon Field - Rain or Shine

I've been working on a format for the tai chi and qigong that I will be presenting on Saturday. I taught two classes yesterday using this new format and with each class I continue to refine that ideas that I have. I've been receiving positive feed back from beginners and more advanced students (I alway's appreciate the feed back and communication). My goal is to make it productive for folks at the beginning and for those of you that are long time practitioners. Lofty goal!!

The advanced youth karate group worked on knife defenses, trapping hands and locks yesterday afternoon. We ended with a review of the kata's. Great help in the room with Sensei Kratz and Colleen.

Hope to see you all in classes.

PS-  I'll be offering three more FREE to the public tai chi and qigong classes tonight and tomorrow nights 5:30-6:30pm and also tomorrow morning 8-9am - Please help pass the word - come if you can! I'm really excited about the 'new' system/form that I'm working on. I think it really, really works well;>)

Saturday's morning class was great.  The weather was crazy, but that didn't keep people away!  We had 11 people!  The energy was great.  I had assistance from Marty, Marcia and Dale.  We concentrated on the warm ups, went into a nice meditation, did a little walking and then paired up.  Marcia worked with Ted on part 3 of the solo form.  The rest of us worked on the dance.  It was a very enthusiastic group.  As you know we finished with the solo form.  Thank you for the opportunity.  Take care, Sandy

John G - nihanchi

John G - Seisan

John G - Seiuchin

John started his training in AKS on Jan. 4, 2001 - He was 9 years old!
One of the most remarkable things about John's study at the Studio is his ability to continue coming to one class per week while attending first Eagle Brooke Academy then Deerfield Academy and playing team sports year round. John is an outstanding student in school and here at the Studio. Because of his busy schedule he has had to do most of the 'work' on his own, but because of the scheduling difficulty he has had to develop an independence in his practice that will serve him well in the years to come. He is graduating DA this spring and is off to Officer Training (ROTC) in mid June. Assuming he can keep up his training on his own, we've talked about a Black Belt testing for him around the holiday's.

Tai Chi class notes - Saturday 3.9.11 - Sandy

Saturday's Tai-Chi Class was wonderful, we had a full house!  The energy was great!  Since we had a shorter class we went right into our warm ups.  Everyone was really wanting to due the whole stretching routine so we ran through the entire sequence at a comfortable pace.  From there we paired up, I had assistance from Marty, Marcia and Dale.  Some worked on the dance and others on the solo form.  Max was visiting so I worked with him on the dance parts 1 through 5.  Such a difference when you have a young, fresh mind, he remembered the sequence with just a few moments of confusion here and there.  He is amazing!  From there we went onto the solo form as a group.  It was a fun class.  Thank you and take care, Sandy

Adult Karate class notes - Monday 4.4.11 - Jeff

Class last night went well.  We started with some warming up, core strength drills and stretching.  Most of the class was spent on forms.  Going through as a group once for detail and again for performance.  There were also groups of students working on learning new sections of their rank forms, including the black belts with sun su.  We ended the class working on the spear self defense drills and techniques that lead from it.

Tips from Sifu Hayward on tutoring

Words of wisdom from Sifu Hayward to his 'tutor's', students that help other students in his classes. That's the Staff and Student Leaders at our Studio.I thought he makes some valid points. Let me know what you think.

1. Tutors are representatives
2. No compulsion to tutor
3. Give your attention to your student
4. Balance talk with doing
5. Teach as you were taught
6. Do not teach if you are not ready, willing or able to give
your best
7. If there is an assignment, follow the assignment
8. Notify a completion of the first section or entire Solo
Form
9. Fair Lady = one per class, four classes to complete
10. When I come over to check in, stop, make an opening

Sifu's Practice 4.3.11 Video Montage

The Flip Video software has this "magic movie" option that does an automatic video montage. It's interesting to look at my couple of hours of practice time condensed into 4-5 second segments. I've been having fun with it;>)
I'm working on using different music, like Shakuhachi Flute and meditation music, but so far I haven't been able to get Flip Share to recognize the file's...Hmmmm! Wish me luck!
I'm culling out some ideas for drills from this morning's practice. I'll post them later....
