Thursday night classes, 7/30/15 - Sensei Jeff

It was just Colleen and I for the staff class.  We worked primarily on the set of 20 arnis tapi tapi techniques.  We also went through the sword form and cleared up a couple details.

The karate class had 5 in it.  We started the class off with the 10 and followed it up with some basics in the form of verticle punching and blocking.  We then moved on to working on the forms and did some pad work with the roundhouse.  We then focused on the basics of various hammer fists with the pad work and put them in to the SD techniques.  Great energy and focus from everyone.

Wednesday night classes, 7/29/15 - Sensei Jeff

We had 4 of us for the t'ai chi class.  Thomas, Colleen, Mike, and myself were in the room.  We started off with the normal warm ups and followed it up with some meditation.  We spent the rest of the class working on the dance.  Great energy from all.

There were 5 of us in the arnis class.  We ran through a number of basics as well as the forms, some disarms and counters to the disarms, and finished off with some tapi tapi review.  The class was mainly geared towards testing material and seeing where everyone was.  Great class.

Monday night classes, 7/13/15 - Sensei Jeff

We had Luke, Phil, Rob and myself for the arnis class.  We went through some of the usual warm ups as well as a number of double zero drills, focusing on being precise with the movements and controlling the circles.  From there we moved in to some block/check/counter drills that started off with a double zero theme and moved in to abeniko (forgive my spelling).  We took a run through the forms and split up afterwards so Phil and Luke could do some drills while Rob and I cleaned up a few things in his empty hand forms.

We had 6 total for the karate class with Thomas in the room assisting.  Thomas did most of the leading through the beginning of the class as I have seemed to anger one of my knees and have been trying to keep from injuring it.  We ran through the 10 as well as some light stretching.  We then ran through the majority of the class working on locking series' that started with an arm bar and would vary depending on the reaction of the opponent.  We ended with some work on SD and forms.

Great work from everyone through both classes and good energy in the room.

Wednesday night t'ai chi and arnis - 7/8/15 - Luke Smith

Wednesday night tai chi class there was Thomas Mike and me Phillip ended up coming in a little bit before class ended and joined us.
We did a decent warm-up in meditation which only allowed us about 15 minutes to work on material and we worked on yielding to do a decent warm-up and a good meditation the last few Wednesday night classes has been eating up the entire hour and it hasn't been giving us much time to work on material although it's been feeling really good to do that extensive of a warm-up and meditation I spoke to I spoke to the small group that seem to be regular about extending the tai chi class back to an hour and a half maybe sometime in the distant fall so that we would have a little more time to your fun material and could keep the more extensive warm up until then if that happens I will try to shorten the warm-up so we do have some time to work on material.

The armis class was also a small class as it has been for recent Philip Thomas Rob and myself
We worked on mostly empty and drills after the warm-up trapping hands trying to not even a little bit deeper into the energies of that and also being able to to receive a punch with the appropriate distance  and line.

Saturday youth karate class, 7/11/15 - Sensei Jeff

We had a good group for the second class and started off with an abbreviated set of the 10.  We moved in to the wallace roundhouse drill and then moved in to a pendulum sweep drill.  We had spent some time focusing on the weight on #6 out of the 10 exercises in the first class, so I played it from that angle in the second class.  We ended with forms, including having demos from everyone at the end.  Jacob Mason was given his stripe for having Siuechen all the way.  Great work from all.

Thursday night classes, 7/9/15 - Sensei Jeff

We had a very open night of classes with Sensei, Ron, Colleen, and myself present for the staff class.  We ran a number of weapons forms as well as some trapping hands drills and spent some time talking about evals and getting new students.

The karate class had Sensei, Ron, Colleen, Thomas, Cheri and myself present.  We continued with a fairly open format and worked in partners for the majority of the class.  We worked on everything from forms to butterfly kicks.

Great energy throughout

I was talking of proprioception—your awareness of where you are in relation to everything else around you.
-- Jennifer Fallon, The Palace of Impossible Dreams, 2008
Origin
Proprioception entered English in the early 1900s as a combination of proprio-
meaning "one's own," and reception meaning "the act of receiving."

Modern Arnis Class Notes, 07.01.2015

Luke, Rob, Colleen and Phil

I attempted to build off the material we went over on Monday.

Using block check counter as the foundation drill.

Warmed up with standard high, low then punyo strike counters.

Next round of counters were:

1. Pick a striking style for each counter
2. Same drill, but notice if technique is corto or largo
3. All counters largo
4. All counters corto
(round 2-4 we had an emphasis on really trying to tune into where the movement of the technique was coming from)
5. Counter Technique focus on abanico double action (emphasis on 4 sides of the stick)
6. Followup techniques after abanico double action-
Use punyo to attach to partners weapon hand/wrist and apply arm bar
Use punyo control to do reversal backwards throw from arm bar.
(stance work emphasis on this technique was shuffle step modern stance for block check and abanico counter, followed by change step back to horse stance, then change step forward, 180 degree turn and step back/down for backward throw) [building off of empty hand stance work from the prior week]

Youth Karate - Thursday, July 2nd, 2015

Private class with two blue belts on Thursday. We went straight into line work for warm up, just doing a few basic combinations. Then we did a quick round of stretching and moved on to forms. We did some partner work on applications from Seiuchin, which I think helped a lot. We did a review of all the self defense techniques, which was definitely needed. For the end of class we spent a little time on proper striking for overhead club attack, using Arnis sticks and Bob for accuracy.

Wednesday youth karate, 7/1/15 - Mr. Perham

On Wednesday, we worked on stretches and basics for side kicks, concentrating on the proper direction and energy. Following this, we worked on the first few self defense techniques. Mark, Silas and Amos all were working on the first three techniques. I stressed the importance of control and ending the techniques by steping back with hands up.

Monday night karate, 6/29/15 - Sensei Reid

Adult Karate Class Report 6-29-15
Angus Reid leading, four students attending

Had a very constructive class working mostly on two-person handwork. For the range of belts in the room – white, blue, & purple – it was really good to spend a while just working on and refining the arm bar, backwards throw, and bent wrist lock out of trapping hands. A lot of useful troubleshooting seemed to be happening, with the folks learning to adjust their body position and use whole-body movement instead of just arm muscles to help apply the locks. For the smaller people, applying locks to their bigger partners was a good challenge.

Thursday night classes, 7/2/15 - Sensei Jeff

I was a little late to the staff class, though Colleen and Seth got started with some work on detail for the 10 exercises for Seth as well as some work or doing nihanchi backwards and chinto.  Once I had gotten in, we continued on with working on the detail on chinto and getting Seth a few more movements.

We had 7 total for the karate class with Colleen and Thomas in the room helping.  We started with Seth running through the 10 exercises and some follow up stretching and warm ups.  We did a few rounds of shadow boxing with a partner followed by a fair amount of work on line work.  We then continued working on some of the drills we worked during Saturday's second class by continuing on with the 4 count drill and worked it in to the gauntlet and then circle self defense.  It got a little goofy towards the end, though everyone was very involved in the drills and there were plenty of laughs and great energy.

Monday night Arnis, 6/29/15

We had 3 for the arnis class.  Phil was leading with Rob and I there as well.  After running some warm ups, we spent the majority of the rest of the class running a round robbin of various striking styles off of block/check/counter.  Great attention to detail through the drills.
