Below are several videos that I shot with my Flip Video this morning

Phil, Luke and I have been working for the past month or more on detail, concepts and standardizing the Modern Arnis empty hand forms. So far we've got up to form #5. Here's Phil practicing #'s 1-5 and myself practicing #5. I've also uploaded Phil, Read and Bob practicing part one of the tai chi cane and another with myself practicing the same. I've also included a clip of my explanation of a push hands drill that I'm calling apparent close out.
Please let me know if you 1. can see them on your computer 2. that they are interesting, informative and/or amusing.
Ok....off to afternoon classes.......

Below are two YouTube videos of Master Ungi Uezu performing Seisan Kata and then explaining the Bonkai for the Kata

These links were emailed to me by Angus a few day's ago. I've realized that it's easy and efficient to post YouTube videos to the Blog. I hope that you can all see them!?!?

Adult Karate class notes - Monday 3.28.11 - Angus

Adult Karate class report 3-28-11
Angus Reid leading, 11 other students present
Colleen Golrick assisting

Warm up & basics:
10 exercises
free stretching (before and after kicking exercise)
quadruple kicks, 5 each side single and double

Class split into pairs to work on unfriendly handshake locking series
for 10-15 minutes.

Same pairs then practiced crescent kick linework combos with focus
pads: first front-leg shuffling inside-outside kick, then rear
outside-inside, then combination front inside-outside -> rear
outside-inside-> new rear inside-outside.
Those who finished early moved on to jumping or spinning kicks.

We then discussed- is the crescent kick good for sparring? Consensus:
yes, but mainly as a feint or to disable the guard. Not so easy to
score points with directly.

Senior students then took turns leading the rest of the class through
kata. Ms. Golrick helped the new student with Naihanchi.

We then put on gear for free sparring- 3-minute rounds, 6 rounds total.

Bagua practice 3.27.11

Looks like the interface with YouTube is the best and easiest way to post the Flip Videos so far. Let me know if you can watch it. Thanks!

Flip Video Posts

I'm experimenting with posting and emailing "Flip Videos" ......So far the best result is using "FlipShare" ...the quality of the BlogSpot video is pretty poor, especially when used in 'Full Screen' mode. I'm going to try YouTube later today and hopefully find a format that's easy (er?) to upload and most importantly easy for you all to view. Using video as a feed back loop to refine one's practice is an invaluable tool. I'm looking for a way to use it that doesn't take up lot's and lot's of class time. If I can shoot the footage in class and later post it for you to view at your leisure ...I think it can be very beneficial for everyone....wish me luck!

Tai Chi class notes - Saturday 3.26.11 - Sandy

Saturday's class was small but productive.  There were 6 of us in total.  We started with the warm ups and proceeded to our standing meditation with the play lute variation included.  I wanted to stay with this past weeks format so we did some of Master Duan's qigong exercises.  From there we did the twenty-one. We graduated to the Dance, Read worked with Dale, Nancy & Karen worked together as always they are a great team.  They had great discussions and could determine on their own what was incorrect and what felt right.  I told them how it is so important to have that awareness.  They are doing great.  I worked with Marty.  Since Marty has shoulder issues and has a tough time with part 6 of the dance,  I tailored it to meet her needs, we did only one repetition of the movements that bothered her shoulder. This way the movement is there, the count if off but the sequence will stick with her and most important not upset her shoulder.   It worked out well so she was able to go onto part seven.  We finished with the solo form.  Thank you & take care, Sandy

Class notes for Tuesday and Wed. March 22 and 23, 2011 - Sifu

I'm trying a different approach to the notes on classes; Less specifics and more general impressions. The idea is that you're all welcome to participate in Staff Blog postings in whatever format suits you. It's all just about communication with each other.

It was good to be back in classes on Tuesday. Although the trip home was such an arduous ordeal that it's taken most of the week to just recover. You can't get there from here!
Tuesday morning meeting with Staff was wonderful as alway's - I primarily worked with Phil and Luke on detail on the first five Arnis forms, others were working on the tai chi short stick form - the tai chi class warmed up and did a round earlier than normal because I had to leave for a dentist appointment. Tuesday evening youth and tai chi classes were a bit small - I worked on the traditional Isshinryu back kick with the youth class and did a longer session of Master Duan's qigong with the tai chi class
Wed Youth class was well attended with Teryn there to help out - after the 10 we worked the kata's and then went on to free sparring for the remainder of class - the tai chi class was also well attended, I again worked Master Duan's qigong with this group - then went on to work the solo form, Read was there to help out.
The Arnis class was also well attended we worked through all the stick and empty hand forms, followed by a couple of applications, trapping hands and finished off with individual tapi tapi sensitivity training.
Both day's were good but I felt especially energized by classes yesterday. It was so good to see everyone on staff and the kids are alway's so special.
I'm truly lucky to have such wonderful people in my life....thanks to all of you for all the help and support while I was away.
Hope to see you in classes later today......

Youth Karate and Adult Karate class notes - Thomas

Colleen and I did two Tuesday 430 classes and Scott and I ran a 630 class on last Thursday. All of the classes went well, Colleen and I kept working on the new blue belts' katas and I helped Simon on his turning back kicks, which was one kick he wanted to work on more. As for the class Scott and I led, we ended up with a very high level class, which went well with the material that we had planned. We did the 10, followed by some more stretches, then a run through the katas. After that we went into some various knife disarm techniques and then trapping hands-to- throws. We brought in a couple from the Monday Arnis class led by Marsha, and people really seemed to like experimenting with some of them.

Adult Karate class notes - Monday 3.21.11 - Angus

Class notes for Adult Karate, Monday, March 21st, 2011
Angus Reid leading, Marcia Gobeil assisting, 5 other students
attending (2 black belts & 1 2nd degree brown- a rank-heavy class)
A very small class, possibly due to the weather (sudden snow after a
week-long meltoff)

Warm up / Basic exercises
10 Exercises
preliminary stretching
quadruple kicks- five each side single and double
second stretching period, with legs now warmed up

Kata- Went through the katas with the black belts taking turns
leading, while the senior black belts helped the beginners with their
forms.

SD/technique work- students split into pairs, each with a practice
club. Attacker swung club like a baseball bat, on various angles off
attack, while defender practiced counters: timing of evasion/approach,
taking control of attacker's arm; defender was free to experiment with
different ideas and ways to deal with the armed attack.
Eye protection was then distributed, and the weapon changed to a padded baton.
Afterwards, we discussed how it felt as the defender, dealing with the
spacing and timing, and the difference between the two weapons.
Consensus was that the stick felt more real and more dangerous.

Comparison was then made to a completely different attack- the hook
kick. Both command a wide sweep in a similar arc, and both present a
timing problem in counter-attacking. The hook kick is, in my opinion,
even trickier due to its versatility in being turned into a roundhouse
kick after its initial hooking action.

In the same pairs, attacker then threw hook kicks while defender
practiced ways of defending and countering. Conversation was then had
after: were the defenses against the baseball bat attack useful in
dealing with a hook kick? Consensus: some, but not a lot. A
well-controlled hook kick is too versatile and commanding to
effectively counter without taking a hit.

I then briefly showed them a technique I use in sparring- a roundhouse
that is allowed to swing past the target after a miss, purposely
'whiffing', to present an inviting target of the back of the head or
exposed side. As the attacker comes in for the point, the foot, still
raised, can be sent out for a kick to the chest, a sort of
parallel-to-the-ground-mule-kick.

We then put on gear for sparring. Remainder of the class was spent on
3-minute free-sparring, with a directive to explore some of the
techniques from earlier in the class.

There was a non-ranked beginning student present, and she was given
individual instruction, first from Marcia, and then from myself. For
the SD/technique portion, we started with just stancework, shuffling
forward and back from a fighting stance. This stancework was then
applied to the evasion/approach for the baseball bat attack.

Block check counter drill with emphasis on the check.

Abenico block check counter, emphasis on range of motion and proper form over actually hitting the stick with the second fanning motion.

Tied that drill, tapi tapi and BCC applications together.

Ended with basic tapi tapi entering and exiting.

Tuesday night 3.15.11 - T'ai Chi notes - Sandy

Tuesday Night Class was small with good energy and light conversation while going through the warm ups.  Besides myself, Dale was there, Christan, James and Janie.

After our warm up I decided to go right into the dance.  Dale assisted me.  He worked with Christan with a complete review of the dance starting in part one through where the sequence starts to break down for Chris.  They worked through Part 5 several times and did well and proceeded into part 6.

Janie and James worked together reviewing the dance Part 1 through 5.  We had discussions about the end of part 3, worked through part 5 several times and then changed partners.  Read came into class and we worked side by side with Janie and Chris at the beginning of part 6.  We finished with the solo form.  Everyone felt the made a little progress.  It was a good class.

Janie and I stayed after class for a little Bagua.  We went through the first and second set. Thank you, Sandy

Tai Chi class notes - Tuesday - Sandy

March 8, 2010 Tuesday Night Class.
We had a small group, small but mighty.  The energy was good, light and fun.  Dale was there to assist me.  Along with Dale, there was Christan, Ted and Dee.  We began with our Stretching, we took our time as Dee is semi new and needed a bit of guidance. From there we went onto our meditation, grand circulation chi gong and some pulling and feeling the chi exercises. After, Dale worked with Ted and Christan on the solo form and concentrating on part 2, repulse monkey area for Christan.  Ted followed.  Then helping Ted with the beginning a part 3.  This way they would each get a little something and a review.  I work with Dee.  We concentrated on empty stepping and the beginning of the solo form.  Alternating the two.  The stepping was the most important to keep reminding Dee of shoulders width, where is his weight and shifting his weight.  He is coming along nicely.  We had a nice class.  Thank you and take care, Sandy

Little Dragons 3.10.2011

Thur Mar 10- Lil Dragons -

Wonderful class! Gianna, Skyler and Shawn were there to "show the way". There were 2 new students; Willow and Grace. (2 five-year-old girls) They seemed to fit in very well right away.

We went through the 10 exercises, and reviewed the etiquette of Lil Dragons. Reminded them to be sure they KNOW their address and phone number.

Did the "Circle Drill", where we passed around the medicine ball, then added a squat in there before passing it. It went well.

Lionfish

2 Person Work Class Notes 3.9.11

Phil, Luke, Bob, Read, Dale, Jess, Dan

I led folks through a modified Arnis stick warm-up to prep for the 2 person cane form.

Worked with folks on the basic opening and first stick intersection for a while, then moved on to the back'n'forth, strike from the side, countered by break the hold and umbrella block... to clear and strike downwards, countered by the two handed over the head block.

I had to leave at 8:15 for an eye appointment , so I'm not sure how the last half of the class went.

I witnessed several "ah-ha" moments, with folks who had the solo cane form already, seeing how the movements of the form actually could be applied. For some, the 2 person form served as another way for them to learn how to set lines and distancing.

I found it to be tricky material to cover given the varied experience levels in the group, but I really enjoy the format for slow detail 2 person weapons work. I would love to have more people with the basics of this so it is easier to work on. I would greatly appreciate a "Sifu refresher" myself on this.

Tuesday Morning Staff 3.8.11

Marty, Bob, Read, Dale, Phil

Dale asked to work on both sides of the first part of the dance. I spent some time on this with him, while Bob and Marty did the Wild Goose.

Read came in and worked the dance with Bob, while Dale, Marty and I worked more on Part 1 of the dance.

Read then tagged in to work with Dale on the dance while Bob and I dusted off the two person cane form, in prep for the Wed. Morning class.

Tue-Mar-8- 4:30 Youth Class notes- Thomas

Colleen and I led a small class of three today. Yanni, Gabe and Symun. We ran through the ten and then worked on self defense for the majority of the class. We went through the first ten SD moves to make sure they had those down, then we moved on to the blue belt level. Starting with the X-block to armbar then progressing to the sword defense(which has a similar technique). After SD, we worked on Siuchen kata. Colleen was guiding Yanni and Gabe through one part, so I took Symun and we worked on his Chinto (which looked very good) then moved on to kicks. I gave him some pointers for keeping his balance during turning back kicks and he made some decent progress on those.

Personal practice - Sunday and Monday March 6&7, 2011 - Sifu

Morning all,
We have WiFi here at the apartment on Grand Turk - It's gorgeous here!  - I'll be posting some photo's to my picasa web albums and sending links to you all via email and/or the Staff Blog - either Phil or I can (I may be to busy with the diving schedule, I'll see) post for any of you if you send along an email with the text.
I practiced at 2:00 am on Sunday...before we left for out 3:30am pick up to go to Logan...Not the best practice I've ever had...but not bad either and I knew it would be better than what I could have done once we arrived. We were all toast when we finally got in to Grand Turk about 6:30 pm with only 2 out of our 6 bags showing up. They say it happens all the time!! The bags did finally arrive later the same day, so no big deal.
Yesterday morning my practice was a bit more civilized, about 8 am, on the slanted beach in front of Aqua House (our apartment), barefoot, with the waves rolling in. I had a wonderful round of Standing Meditation as my feet sunk (sunged?) into the beach....I was ONE with the ocean;>) The round of Tai Chi on the other hand was a bit more challenging. I think I'll practice on a flatter surface this morning....
We had our first snorkel yesterday afternoon and our first day of diving is today. We're about to take off to the dive shop to do the initial paper work, gear orientation..etc. The swell from the north west is up, so I think we'll be diving the south end of the island....no camera on the first day of diving so we can reacclimatizes our selves to all the details involved with safe Scuba Diving....Like going to a distant planet!
Thanks again for all that your doing to keep the teaching schedule going....greatly appreciated!!!
A little guest;>)
Sunset from the deck
My best to the students and fellow staff.....I'll write again soon!

Modern Arnis Class Notes 03.07.2011

Great energy in the room.

Thursday 3.3.11 class notes - Sifu

Bagua - Bob, Read, Sandy and I - I led through Master Choi's Standing set - went on to the old eight palms, with some stance work variations - worked on change #5 of the second Yin Fu set, solo, then worked a few applications from the palm position and the willow leaf block at the beginning of the change - good class

Tai Chi - 10-12 students - Read, Sandy, Dale and Marty assisting - Marty led the qigong warm ups - there was one new student there for the second class and an old student Randy, who studied briefly with me 20 years ago. He was there for his every 10 years 'tune up' so I based the class around him, concentrating on part one and things to observe and adjust as needed - I also did a small amount of two person work with Randy, as he only does part one of the solo form in his practice and is in need of physical contact with a skilled practitioner. The great thing about Randy is that he has a personal practice of tai chi, he has been practicing 5/6 day's a week for 20 YEARS!!! Now THAT'S the hard part. Bravo!!
Anyway the group eventually broke into smaller groups to work on the form or the Dance....we did a group round to the music at the end.

Little Dragons - 8 students - Colleen assisting - started with the running + routine - went on to the 10 with basics in between - reviewed Nihanchi (first half) - ended with a short lying meditation

Youth Karate - 8-10 students - Colleen assisting - Colleen led the 10 and went on to some basics - went on to a critical distancing exercise with offensive side kick (that went really well) - I talked about us all being 'classmates' and not being in any kind of competition with each other, especially the girls against the boys - we switched partners regularly and I asked them to speak to each other at the end of the drills talking about how the drill 'felt' to them, how the 'partnership' was working (I thought they all did really well with this) - we broke into two groups I took the 4 that are working on Seiuchin and Colleen and Dylan took the students that are working on Nihanchi -

Staff Training - Colleen and I worked on the Tai Chi Jian Sword form and tapi tapi - excellent training!

Adult Karate - I started with a 15 minute Standing Meditation with explanation of alignment, breathing and mind intent (the group did really well with this) I went on to lead the 10 with a variation in #9 - paired up for some siniwalli boxing drills and tech's - went on to the counter the counter locking drill from Roland Rivera - ran out of time....

Wed. 3.2.11 class notes - Sifu

Youth Karate - 10-12 students - Sensei Kratz, Teryn, Lily assisting - Sensei Kratz led the class, warm up, calisthenics, spent the majority of the class free sparring

Tai Chi - 5 students - no T'ai Chi Staff present - I led the qigong warm ups - went on to a slow round stopping of part one and the beginning of part 2. Did several rounds of part one. Explained the beginning moves in part two. James helped towards the end of class, breaking off with Teryn - I took the rest of the group further into part 2

Arnis - 8 students - Justin and Jeff assisting - did double stick twirling as a warm up - block, check, counter with striking styles - went on to the slap off drill, with and without stick - ended with a left to right tapi tapi drill

2 Person Work Class Notes 3.2.2011

Small class, Luke leading (Phil,Bob,Dale,Jess,Dan) Read called out.

Jess with some editorial from Luke led the 10 as a warmup.

The theme for the class was stealing energy.

Initial platform for the energy stealing was the Roland R. Locking series. Decided we needed to work some basic locks and transitions first though, and worked the backward throw, to the center lock for quite a while.

Jess & Bob were able to move on to the Rolland drill and work on being aware of how the counters to each of the locks tied in to stealing the energy of the lock before it.

Moved on to a empty hand sinawali drill with stealing the energy from the number one strike and doing a large circle going to a low standing center lock.

Almost went on to small circle to backward throw off a straight punch feed, but we ran out of time.

Good material, good group, cold room.

Sifu, I changed the morning program on the thermostat to go to 65 a little before class starts and go back to 55 at 9am. Please let me know if this is okay. - Phil

Tuesday 3.1.11 class notes - Sifu

Well it was a very different day for me....starting with a really, really wonderful gathering of Staff at 7am....Thanks you guy's!! That was very, very special!! It was so nice to see everyone, especially Wayne!
Great folks, great food, excellent B-Day cake;>) Many thanks to all who participated and special thanks to Sandy....you guy's are much sneakier than I previously thought!!
I had a wonderful Round of Tai Chi with the group and some Dance practice afterwards

The afternoon youth Karate class had about 9-10 students with Colleen and Scott assisting - Went right into the Kata's with several rep's each and lot's of detail ...especially the stance work. I've been working the stance work in the Kata's a lot lately....it's getting better! We broke into groups as we went along. With Skyler and Gabe working the beginning of Seiuchin. Ended class with trapping hands - Good class

Tai Chi - 7-8 students - Sandy and Dale assisting - There was one new students 'D' the younger brother of Max and the son of Ted - I led the qigong warm ups with detail, talked about the TL breathing and wuji stance awareness - I worked the 90 degree stance work with Chris, Dale and D - James and Pat worked together and Sandy and Ted worked together - we ended with my group working on a two person rooting exercise and the rest working on the Dance - nice class!

Great Day...thanks for all the b-day wishes;.)

Adult Karate class notes - Monday 2.28.11 - Jeff

We started the class with the 10 excersises and also some strengthening excersises and then moved on to partner stretching.  The majority of the class was spent on short range / high power techniques.  We did hammer fists, elbows, knees, half roundhouse, and finished with pushing.  We practiced just the push and then moved in to some drills on entering in to the push.
