Arnis class notes - Monday - Jeff Chaisson

Monday night arnis class - We had 5 in attendance as well as myself.  Three black belts and three blue belts, so the numbers worked out well.  We started with some twirling for warm ups and moved in to tapi tapi. I had Luke, Phil, and myself share one of our favorite techniques to teach in the class.  We ended the class with a run through the forms.

Adult Karate class notes Thursday March 15, 2012 - Jeff

Thursday nights calss went well.  We had 8 total including myself.  We ran the the usual warm ups and core strength exercises.  We worked mainly on elbows with a couple of knees at the end of class.  We worked mostly on the different angles of elbows.  Practicing elbows from the front arm and rear going on horrizontal planes, vertical planes, and working some drills that used the push / pull aspect.  We worked the knees off of the wedge defensive technique at the end of class.

Arnis and Adult Karate Monday 2/6/12 - Jeff

The Arnis class was lightly attended with only four students, though the energy in the room was great.  After the warm ups we started with the forms with a focus on the stances and shape of the body through the forms.  After the intitial run through, me and Luke split the blue belts up and worked on sequence.  We also worked the 6/8/10/12 count drill with focus on the stancework and moved on to tapi tapi with a focus on entering and exiting.

The karate class had a total of seven, and again, had great energy.  We started with the 10 exerceises.  We worked lunges for a leg strengthening drill while paying close attention to the location of the knee in relation to the foot.  We also did some crunches and partner streching.  We started off with the forms as a way of looking at the more classical stances and body shape.  We then moved on to a number of sparring stance drills.  We took turns with who was leading and had one partner shuffle forward and back randomly so that the follower had to keep the critical distance.  We then did the same thing except with a horse stance and moving around a circle.  Next we went back to the sparring stance and worked with forward and back movements as well as changing angles.  We translated this in to harmony sparring and then light free sparring.

That about sums it up.
Hope to see you soon,
Jeff

Monday 12.12.11 - Adult Karate and Arnis class notes - Jeff

Classes on Monday night well, though a little low in attendance.  The arnis class had four students including myself.  We started with the normal warm ups and went in to the cane and empty hand forms.  Marcia and I spent time Colleen and David teaching the new empty hand and cane forms at the end of each run.  We went in to tapi tapi at the end of the class to try to stay with the theme of free form.
The karate class had seven students including myself.  We started with the 10 exercises and some core strengthening drills as well as some partner streching.  We ran some self defense scenarios off of wrist grabs.  This lead in to the attacker using random grabs and the defender coming up with their own self defense techniques.  We finished the class with cirlce self defense.  The enregy overall was excellent for both the arnis and karate class.

Arnis and Karate class notes - Monday 6/27/11 - Jeff

The arnis class had a couple of beginner students in it, so much of the class was focused on the 12 angles of attack and block cehck counter.  We also worked on the first stick anyo as a group and ran through the rest of the anyos a little more quickly.

The karate class got a bit sticky, so after streching and strengthening drills we did a large amount of throws and ground work.  Very good energy and effort by all through both classes.

We started the class with the 10 excersises and also some strengthening excersises and then moved on to partner stretching.  The majority of the class was spent on short range / high power techniques.  We did hammer fists, elbows, knees, half roundhouse, and finished with pushing.  We practiced just the push and then moved in to some drills on entering in to the push.

Adult Karate class notes - Monday 11.1.10 - Jeff

Monday's class only had six students as well as myself.  We ran through the 10 exercises and did some core strength drills.  We took a quick run through the forms and spent the rest of the class on sparring.  The main focus was paying attention to the timing of your opponent.

Adult Karate Class Notes Monday 9.27.10 - Jeff C.

Class last night went well.  We started out with the 10 exercises and went on to doing some lunges and crunches for core strengthening exercises.  We did some partner stretching as well.  The beginning of the class was spent doing some pad work up and down the room.  Roundhouse, crescent, and hook kicks followed by jab/cross and backfist/ridge hand.  I started some trapping hands after the pad work and focused on the single arm inside blocks and strikes as well as the same to the outside of the arm.  The main point I was trying to show was how you could use one arm to block to the inside or the outside of any strike comming in.  We finished with a run through all of the karate forms.  The overall energy in the class was very good.
I do plan on joining the blog and authoring my own posts at some point, I just haven't gotten to it yet.  Hope to see you soon.
