Modern Arnis Class Notes 08.13.2012
Dave, Scott, Thomas with Luke assisting
Quick warm up followed by work on the disarms and counters. Spent all but 5 minutes of class on the disarms. For some it was gaining the techniques for 1-12 for others we worked increasing the depth of the skill.
Ended with a review of the counter for counter locking series.
time flew by.

Modern Arnis Class Notes 08.01.2012
Private lesson with Phil & Scott (had a few call outs)
With Scott's upcoming BlackBelt test I tried to gear the time towards good crossover material.
After a quick warm up, we went strait to the handshake series with left and right hands. I made sure we brought every lock to slap, and we made the time at each lock to make sure the positioning of the lever and fulcrum were solid and the the body was providing the juice for the locks. Scott did very well at incorporating adjustment s on the right side over to the left side.
We then moved on the RR counter for counter series left and right. We worked on a number of items in this drill including reversing energies leading up to the standing center and backwards throw.
Reviewed the sinawalis.
Then moved on to some trapping, and added locks and throws to ground.
Nice practice.

2 Person Work Notes 08.01.2012
Phil, Dave R., Bob, Read
Spent a lot of time on locks with Dave and Bob reviewing the handshake series. I occasionally consulted on order and transitions.
Read and I reviewed once through each side of the dance. Spent some time on the Rolland counter for counter locking series. Worked corto/largo versions with little footwork/full stepping.
Read and I reviewed the double broadsword.
Bob and Dave worked some trapping hands, then Read and I joined the trapping hands mix.
Bob and I both had to leave a little early, and Read and Dave were working on some single sinawali when I left.
Nice practice, and great to have Dave join us.

Modern Arnis Class Notes 07.23.2012
Jeff, Colleen, Scott, Thomas
After a quick warm-up I had the group split into pairs. Worked the disarms, but had the feed be the ballente striking pattern. It was awkward at first for the strikers and the disarmers, but after 15-20 minutes it seemed to be going much smoother. We moved on to working the flow drill. starting with low strikes, then moving to high strikes and then blending the high and low. (all with single stick first) then moved on to the same drill with stick and knife vs single stick. Ended with the person doing the flow drill finding disarms, locks, and take downs from within the flow of the drill.
Seemed like there was a visible upgrade with the material for all involved.

2 person Practice Notes 07.04.2012
Luke and I had a great practice this morning at the studio.
we started off with a review of the dance.
The we moved on to creating a new empty hand give and take drill inspired by the recent video post of Ernesto Presas Jr. and the work we have been doing with the 8 count drill.
The drill happens to incorporate some great split energy in it, which was a nice bonus given the theme of the month.
Luke and I plan on working the drill some more over the next couple of weeks before presenting it to others.
really great practice with several "Arnis looks" and contemplation.
Happy 4th,
Phil

2 person work notes 06.27.2012
Luke, Phil, Bob, Read.
We spent most of the practice reviewing the dance.
A great deal of contemplation was given to section 7 from "shoulder to brush knee twist, to wave hands like clouds to ward off right."
Looking at energy direction, balance points, stance work and timing.
Nice practice with lots of chin scratching pondering.
It was nice to have Luke back for the morning practice.
-Phil
Also did once through the double broadsword form.

Modern Arnis Class Notes 05.21.2012
Small class (Luke, Colleen, Scott, Jeff, Phil)
Potential new Karate/Arnis Student watching the class. Michael came primarily interested in checking out the Karate class, but arrived early enough to catch the whole Arnis class as well. I spent some time talking with him about the exercises and fundamentals of Arnis.
Started class with an abbreviated stick warm up while walking. The focus of the most of the class was on accuracy & targeting.
First using block check counter, looking at slow and controlled strikes to the hand instead the cane. Counters high, low and punyo with both right and left sides.
Then we brought the accuracy and targeting focus to the first three basic tappi tappi drills we worked on last Monday. I asked people to sacrifice timing a bit on the receiving side of the polk so that the poker could really take their time and get their body lined up right for the strikes to actually find the mark.
We ended the last 5 minutes of class with a review of the RR locking series. I introduced a slight variation that we have been working on Wednesday morning. On the receiving end of the low hammer fist to the groin area, instead of blocking it with open thumb and fingers grab, using more of a combination lower ward off or roll back that deflects the strike off target. It still sets up the other side nicely for a backwards throw. From an Arnis perspective it also highlights one more application use for the lower "cover" transition technique between the other punches and blocks in the Arnis forms.
Good class. Nice to continue having colleen in the room and great to have Jeff and Scott as well.
Luke's insights and focus into the attention to the quality of the "basics" have been very helpful for me lately in adjusting how I think about my personal practice, and how I'm trying to present things in the group setting.

Modern Arnis Class Notes 05.14.2012
Private Lesson (Phil, Luke, Colleen)
Did a walking stick warm up, followed by some single and double stick twirling.
We then spent most of the class on practicing basic tapi tapi techniques. We focused on 3 primary "techniques."
1. Basic right/right entrance and exit
2. Basic right/right entrance, pass, number 7 poke, exit
3. Basic right/right entrance, pass, number 7 poke, reinforced block with hand attachment, poke 6, reinforced block with hand attachment, number 7 poke, exit.
We discussed that the next baseline techniques would be lower passing, simple stick locking/control and punyo passing. We also talked about how having these basic techniques developed will allow for a higher level of skill and spontaneity with more flashy technique combos.
We ended class with a quick review of stick forms, part 1 & 2 of the tai chi cane and the empty hand forms. (1-4 for Colleen, all 8 for Luke and I)
Wonderful training partners.

Modern Arnis Class Notes 04.30.2012
Private practice/lesson today. (Luke, Dave, Phil) [colleen called out, & Sensei Kratz joined in half way through through class]
Started with a warm up, standard twirling prep and some work on fluid attacks. we spent a little extra time on leg stretches and then went over to the railing and did the front kick, back kick, sidekick drill. 10 reps each leg with holding on the last kicks.
the rest of the class I worked with Dave, and Sensei and Luke worked on their own.
Dave and I worked n sinawali for a while. Then we switched to 1 stick vs 2 sticks. I spent most of the time leading with the two sticks with Dave focusing on block check counter. We spent a lot of time on body position, footwork and awareness of checking hand position within the drill. After a solid 15 minutes of this my arms were nice and red, and Dave had a really good heavy hand check going.
We spent another 10 minutes on tapi tapi, mostly just on entering and exiting.
5 minutes review of the RR locking set.
Small group, but great attention and spirit in the room.
-Phil
