Adult Karate Class Report Monday 12-29-14 Sensei Angus Reid

Adult Karate Class Report 12-29-14
Angus Reid leading, seven other students and black belts attending

Had a large class for a Monday, with a rainbow assortment of belts, which was a nice scenario. Warmed up with the usual 10, standing kicks, and some trapping hands and shadow sparring, and also did an exercise with the weighted balls inspired by a partner acrobatics training drill I've done, which was to give a very physical sense of the proper way to absorb and direct weight into the ground, in crouching-type movements such as exercise #8.

Building on the turning kicks we worked on last Monday, we trained the turning back kick in a moving line, first alone and then with a partner for distancing, and everyone improved and was able to eliminate the unwanted spinnyness from the forward movement of the kick. We also briefly looked at the alternate movements that one could do out of the same kick prep, including a twisting lotus kick and a lifting foot sweep.

Each senior student then took a lower rank and helped them on their rank form for a few minutes. We finished with cool-down static stretching. All-in-all, we couldn't have asked for a better last class of the year.

Monday night classes, 12/22/14 Sensei Jeff

Youth karate class - We had a good turn out despite the odd timing.  Sensei and Thomas were both helping.  We started out with some warm-ups and running exercises around the room to help warm the room up.  We did some great work on the wedge drills, starting with partner work and ending with Sensei, Thomas, and I all taking 2-3 students each to try and amp the drill up.  We ended with form demos from Sailor and Tristan.  Both ended up getting their tips.

Arnis - We had a good group with Sensei, Luke, Jack, and Thomas as well as myself.  We spent the majority of the class working on the tapi tapi drills.  Sensei had some great suggestions for the progression.  We ended on working on the unfriendly had shake, and comparing outlooks to get everyone on the same ideas.

Thursday night karate, 12/18/14 - Sensei Jeff

We had a small, but good group.  Colleen, Cheri, John, and myself were all training.  Everyone wanted to jump around a bit to try and burn some calories before Christmas, so we spent the beginning of the class focusing on line work basics, ending with each person doing some solo work with me leading them.  We moved on to some pad work with elbows, and ended with some sparring drills for control up and down the room.  Great energy from everyone.

Youth Karate - Thursday, December 11, 2014

Good crowd on Thursday (about eight of us). Interspersed basics into the ten exercises, then worked on rear leg roundhouse kicks, focusing on the driving of the knee and how that plays into the pivot. Also worked on forms for the different ranks.

Monday night classes, 12/8/14 - Sensei Jeff

We had 4 for the arnis class.  Phil, Jack, Rob, and myself were all present and training.  We started with some warm ups and went right in to the 11 arnis tapi tapi techniques as well as unofficial 12 and 13.  We then went in to some progressive step techniques, working on a clockwise to standing center lock and counterclockwise to backward throw technique.

We had a private karate class with just Mike and I.  We went through sieuchen and pulled some drills out to focus on.  We worked the chicken neck block to shuto strike as well as the crescent kick.  We made a big focus on relaxation and were able to isolate some muscle groups that were working when they were not supposed to be.  We had a good deal of discussion on the principles behind relaxed techniques as well.  Mike made great progress.

Thursday night classes, 12/4/14 - Sensei Jeff

It was just Colleen and I for the staff class.  We worked on the t'ai chi sword form as well as some review and adjustments to monkey staff.  We ended with a review of the arnis tapi tapi techniques.

We had a great adult class with 8 total including myself.  We started with some sparring stance work drills that led in to jabbing and crossing as well as spider walking.  We worked on some two hand wrist grab self defense techniques.  We focused on various techniques from a clockwise and counterclockwise motion.  Towards the end of class, Colleen worked with John on nihanchi while the rest of us worked on the mobility throw.  Great energy from all.

Monday night karate, 12/1/14 - Sensei Jeff

We had 4 for the adult karate class.  Tucker, Mike, Cheri, John, and myself were all training.  We started with some warm-ups and some core strength exercises.  We spent a large portion of the class  focusing on various techniques to pads with a huge focus on control awareness of the techniques being used.  Everyone did a great job keeping their mental involvement in the training.  We ended with some double wrist grab self defense techniques to get some variety and in and get the energy a bit more amped up for the end of the class.  Great work by all.
